Why mobile pasture based milking?
Pastured dairy cows are a must in organic agriculture and have been proven to produce the healthiest, most nutritious and Omega-3 rich milk. The happiest cows on this planet graze on beautiful pastures. A cow roaming without grazing just to be milked is a cow loosing milk per each kilometer walked. By following their dairy cows, most effective farmers produce more milk and better milk. Most organic dairy cows have the possibilities to go outside for a walk, or to graze a little around the farm base. Unfortunately, the herd gets too big too fast and then letting cows roam around becomes a challenge with many problems, such as:

Time losses - the cows are not the only ones who lose time - walking the cows to farm base, setting up the fence along trails takes a lot of time and expense for the farmers. The cows have to be walked in herds for milking at least twice a day and that causes the destruction of grass and pastures making trails and you can just imagine what happens when it rains. When they walk on paved roads it causes traffic problems for vehicles and hooves problems for the cows. Plus odor free milking and without manure managing is impossible.

That is where our mobile milking system MOOTECH becomes superior to all the other stationary milking equipment, it makes it possible for the cows to stay outside for the entire summer without even leaving the pasture. With this system herd trails are not needed and cows are milked in the mobile parlor that is on the grazing pasture.

Cows by their nature have to live outside and graze fresh grass. Even their waste dissolves naturally fertilizing the soil instead of fermenting and producing polluting gasses inside of facility.  The milking parlor is mobile and can be easily moved daily to the next paddock saving grass on the pasture. The entire milking process becomes significantly shorter – it takes only to go to the parlor on the pasture, milk the cows and go back home.

In this mobile milking system no stationary power and water supplies are needed on the pasture. Water is brought to the pasture in two separate thermally isolated tanks filled with tap water.

The mobile milking parlor has a tin roof protecting from rain and sunshine. Parlor is equipped with lighting powered from mobile vacuum unit or generator in accordance to hygiene requirements.

An attendant works in the middle path of the parlor and serves the cows while sitting. Height of the movable stools selected to ensure most ergonomic sitting position. Mobile parlor gives most safety during the milking process – attendant is separated from animals. Cows are milked in separate individual boxes and not disturbed by other animals. No odors as in indoor parlors. Attendant’s clothes stay much cleaner than indoors during stationary milking.

 The mobile parlor is light but firm – it can be easily towed by even a small (e.g. 9-10 HP) tractor or another suitable vehicle.

Mobile pasture based milking process and system description

Mobile milking system MOOTECH consists of two main components:
1. Mobile milking parlor, which is towed to milking paddock on its own wheels and stays on the pasture.

2. Mobile milking equipment installed on a small truck or trailer.

 

There are two types of milking equipment in the trailer or truck – with milk cooling or direct milking to vacuumed tank. The trailer is tented or with hard dust and water proof top cover. (We recommend hard top trailer as the best option).

The economic milking system (without cooling option) consists of:
Tented or hard top soft suspension trailer equipped with:
• diesel-powered vacuum milking unit (electric start);
• Two thermally isolated floor mounted hot and cold water tanks;
• S/S seamless vacuumable milk tank;
• Septic tank (for the used water discharge)

In the process of preparation both water tanks are filled with tap water.  Hot water boiler is equipped with an electric heater which is plugged to stationary electricity supply. Boilers filled under pressure of no less than 3 BAR/43.5 PSI, not exceeding 4 BAR/ 58 PSI (usually it is a standard cold tap water supply pressure). Hot water boiler equipped with thermostat which can be set up to 90 C/ 194 F water heating.

Preparation is finished by disconnecting stationary water and electricity supply and going to the pasture. All mobile equipment in the trailer is firmly mounted to the water proof floor for reliable transportation.

On arrival to the milking site, trailer is parked outside the paddock next to the mobile milking parlor. Trailer and equipment stays safe of animals outside fencing.

Parlor’s milk and vacuum lines are connected to the milk or cooling tank in the trailer. Milk and vacuum hoses are easily connected by quick clamps and fittings.

Cows are driven to a small, fenced waiting paddock. Animals usually get some concentrate feed therefore enter the parlor willingly. No forced drive is needed. Within 3 to 5 days cows get used to mobile parlor and feel safe.

After milking cows enter fresh pasture paddock (if parlour is moved daily) or same paddock. Depending on parlour’s size - from 2 to 12 (2, 4, 2x4, 6 or 2 x 6 parlours) cows are milked at the same time. Average milking time per place/cow is 6-7 minutes. In this type tandem parlour cows enter and exit each milking box individually. Slow milking cows do not hold others.
 After milking is done milking units are placed on washing stations.

Vacuum operated semi-automatic washing device used in case of direct milking to tank (with the cooling system MOOTECH automatic washing device is recommended). Semi-automatic washing device is vacuum operated and an electricity supply is not needed. Milk hose is disconnected from milk tank and connected to a semi-automatic washing device. Water from boilers is filled to a special S/S water container, system washing takes three cycles – prewash, main wash and rinsing.  Warm water is used for the first washing cycle and used water is discharged to septic tank. Then hot water and detergents are used. Washing device cycles water and detergents through the system several times. Used water goes to septic tank and during the last cycle the system is rinsed with cold water. Consumption of cold and hot water is almost equal. At the end the system is usually dried out with a wet sponge with the help of vacuum. The sponge is inserted into a milk pipe, with the help of vacuum it is run through the pipes and hoses and then taken out from a special sponge trap located next to the washing device. The washing process takes about 15 min.

Upon milking and washing processes completion the vacuum and pipe hoses are disconnected from the parlor. Milk is transported in the tank to the farm base. Milk is discharged from the mobile tank to a bulk stationary milk cooling tank with an electric milk pump.

 It is very important to not forget to open the vent before emptying milk tank!

After the tank is emptied it has to be washed. A milk pump’s hose is connected to a washing spraying ball which is installed in the lid of the tank, warm water is poured for rinsing and the milk pump is turned on. A complete washing process has the same three cycles as the parlor wash. After this the system is ready for the next milking. Boilers can be filled and connected to an electric power supply for heating in preparation for the next milking.

When milk is cooled during milking, milking system consists of:
• milking parlour with milk receiving jar, installed and usually recommended automatic washing system MOOTECH.
• Trailer with an installed milk cooling tank, mounted on a power supply (diesel powered generator or tractor PTO driven generator, an electric vacuum unit).Preparation for milking is identical to direct milking to a tank.  Milk cooling during milking is recommended when the milking process takes longer than two hours. Milk cooling ensures the highest milk quality. After discharging milk to stationary milk cooling tank, final cooling time is substantially reduced in comparison to direct milking without cooling. For milk cooling an electrical power supply is necessary – electric power generator is used in the system. 

The milking to a cooling tank itself is also identical to direct milking to a tank.
Unique design fully automatic washing system takes care of the parlor washing process. Microprocessor controlled washing system MOOTECH performs automatic detergent dosage, washing cycle parameters change and cycle system washing with water-air injection (Turbo Wash).
Fully automatic washing process takes about 15 minutes, used water is automatically discharged to septic tank.
Precooled milk is transported to farm base and transferred to stationary milk tank where finally cooled to 4C.
Mobile cooling tank is washed, trailer connected to base power supply, automatic cooling tank washing device switched on (if installed). Washing process includes the same three cycles.
